Greetings all! It’s been a long since we’ve had an announcement but Sally warrants one for sure! She is a lovely, energetic dog looking for a home. Here are her stats:

Breed: Terrier mix
Age: 8 months old
Gender: Female
Size: Currently 40 lbs.
Spayed: Yes
Cats: No
Kids: 14+
ID #: 10-5391

Sally is currently in foster care for the Seattle Animal Shelter.

Sally is a curious, energetic, and affectionate dog looking for a lifelong companion. She always ready to go on a walk, hike and/or have a play-date. Her foster family has been working with this fabulous girl each day on basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "down." She will be a wonderful companion for an active guardian who will continue her training.

Sally accepts encouragement in the form of treats, praise and play! She is a real sweetheart and loves all people, dogs and would love a canine buddy although that is not a deal breaker. She will do best in an adults-only, dog-savvy, home with a guardian who can handle (and appreciate!) her high spirits. Feel free to email the foster mom to find out more about her. She just might be the perfect match!

For more information about Sally, email her foster mom, Teresa.

Greetings dog lovers! This spring promises to be very exciting at UCLA Dogs!

We're planning a "Care Package Drive" for the folks caring for our military service dogs stationed in Iraq. Dogs in the military have a multitude of purposes and there are many people involved in helping them do their jobs and maintaining their well being. We look forward to a short article from Maj Matt Takara, DVM who has been stationed in Iraq in next month's newsletter to tell us more about it.

We've not yet set a date for the drive, but if you are interested in sending the canine handlers and veterinary staff a little support from home our sources tell us they could really use the following:

Personal Items
Small pack (travel/individual) tissues
Boxed tissues (for some unknown reason they have NO tissues there)
Loofah sponges/cloths
Unscented body/hand lotion
Scented (girly-girl) body/hand lotion
Toothbrushes

Snacks (pre-packaged)
Nuts
Candy
Trail mix
Beef jerky
Cookies
Fruit snacks
Granola bars
Microwave popcorn
Pre-packaged Rice Krispie treats (HUGE hit!)
Pocket-sized bottles of hand sanitizer
Magazines (both male and female oriented)

Working Dogs
Tennis balls (super tough variety that withstands powerful jaws!)
Extreme Kong toys (the black ones), size XL (5.5")

Things NOT to send
Wet wipes
Toiletries
Pork based products
Alcohol
Tobacco products
Chocolate (it melts!)

Working dog Bady and his buddy Maj Matt Takara DVM.

Also coming up in Spring, at the end of May is the Dog Walker's Academy, hosted by UCLA Dogs and held by dogTEC. There are only 10 or so spots left, so if you are considering becoming - or perhaps you already are! - a professional dog walker this is the workshop for you! Learn about selecting and managing a group of dogs to run together, ideas on how to get started in the business and more. Also part of the weekend is Pet First Aid training. What a great opportunity! Don't miss it!

27October2009

Greetings all,

We hope you and your families are enjoying this crisp autumn weather!

UCLA Dogs is proud to announce that Linda and Andrea will be heading to San Francisco this week by special invitation to dogTEC’s Dog Walker’s Academy, held by former SF/SPCA Director of Training and Behavior Veronica Boutelle MA Ed, CTC. We look forward to this incredible opportunity!

As a result we’d like to remind you that there are no classes or Puppy Play Group scheduled for Thursday October 29th through Sunday November 1st.

The normal class schedule will resume on Monday the 2nd, as scheduled. Classes for tomorrow night, Wednesday the 28th are likewise in session.

Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing everyone again next week!

2Sept2009

Summer is nearly over - get your vacation days in while you can!

As a reminder to all of you in weekend classes and Puppy Play Group, UCLA Dogs is closed for the Labor Day holiday, starting on Saturday the 5th. We will resume our normal schedule on Tuesday the 8th of September.

Also this month is the first Calming Rambunctious Rover seminar given by Ruth LaRocque, CTC CPDT. Please see our Services Page for more information!

29July2009

Well, the heat continues! So we've gone ahead and cancelled class for tomorrow, Thursday the 30th. It's just far too hot. All affected students have been notified; do please make note of the change. We hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone but the entire class's welfare and safety are just too important to jeopardize in this weather.

We'll see you next week!

28July2009

Hi everyone! We have a few scheduling updates you all should know about:

Class is canceled for Wednesday July 28th, and we are considering doing the same on the 29th if there is no change in weather. Emails have been sent to all affected students but we want to make certain everyone is aware just incase their spam filter has relegated us to the Junk Folder.

It is simply too hot out for people and dogs to becomfortable and able to learn in our studio. We are expecting temperatures upwards of 95°, which means ambient temperature in the studio is likely to be upward of 100°. Not fun!

We've also cancelled classes as well as puppy play this weekend; Thank you SeaFair! Traffic is just too hectic to ask everyone to come in, and put those who understandably do not wish to tough it out behind by a week. The class schedule has been changed accordingly and has been sent to all weekend students. Please email us if you have questions!

Please stay safe in this heat and we recommend you leave pups at home unless absolutely necessary. Look for our Newsletter in the next 24 hours. There's some great information from our lovely head instructor, Linda McVay, myself (at least I like to think it's great) and a new voice: Layla Loveless, whom many of you have met in class coaching students.

21June2009

Puppy Play is cancled this Sunday, June 28th. Also see below...

We are closed all weekend for the July 4th holiday! That means there will be no class or play groups July 3 - 5. Our normal schedule will resume on Monday the 6th. Have fun everyone and be safe!

28April2009

Coming up on Friday May 8th is
UCLA Dogs' Relaxed Heel Workshop

This is a one hour workshop to get you and your pooch started on a relaxed, everyday heel or to fine tune the one you've already started.

A "relaxed heel" is not a formal heel as seen in obedience competitions but rather the simple act of having your dog walk at your side on a loose leash, making daily outings so much more pleasant.

It is helpful if you have already "charged" a clicker or marker word. You may sign-up online or RSVP to trainer@ucladogs.com. Dogs must be reasonably calm and happy in a classroom setting in order that you and your pal be able to benefit from this workshop.

Space is limited and we expect it to fill quickly. Sign up today!

What's in the bag? A Pet Nutrition Seminar

On May 16th at 2pm University Canine Learning Academy will host a nutrition seminar given by Nicole Bembry. Nicole is the owner of Immortal Dog Pet Supply and Bakery. Topics will include proper nutrition, selecting pet food, raw feeding, and supplement use. There will be a question and answer period as well. We at UCLA Dogs hope you are all staying warm and dry on this grey, damp day! Snow? April fools!

Children and Dogs by Linda McVay

Dogs are wonderful companions! They have lived with us for thousands of years contributing in a multitude of ways to the survival of the human species. Dogs have churned our butter, transported people and goods across frozen lands and vast plains, they have hunted with man providing food, warmth, companionship and protection. Dogs are everywhere! To this day, dogs contribute to the lives of their families and to humanity in general, but in the end there is a very important fact that we as humans need to keep in mind: dogs are dogs...

UCLA friends, family and students voted; the Obamas listened!

At UCLA's grand opening, there was a vote as to which of the two candidates the Obamas should get as a new member of the family: a Portuguese Water Dog or a Labradoodle. The election resulted in a landslide for the Portuguese Water Dog.

Well, it's been officially announced and the PWD is about to gain White House fame. Click here to learn more. The Obamas plan to adopt a dog in need of a home.

While we here at UCLA support the ethical and responsible breeding of purebred dogs, it should be mentioned that families need to choose the right dog. What's the "right" dog, you ask? One whose personality and temperament you and your family will enjoy and whose needs you are able to meet. The sad fact is that most breeds of dog go through a fad phase at one point or another where it is fashionable to own one. People rush out and purchase the latest "thing" without regard to the fact that the dog may be a poor fit for their lifestyle. For some people, a puppy is not a good option either and we do encourage those of you not in a position to raise one to consider an adult dog. There are lots of adolescent, adult and senior dogs who need love and care too.

Please consider all your options when looking to add a family member to your household and really put some time into finding the right one. There is no single "right" type of dog. Like my grandma used to say, "That's why they make chocolate and vanilla." Everyone likes something different. Vive la difference!

17Feb2009

We are proud to announce that we will be hosting a business development seminar for dog professionals on April 4-5, 2009!

Dog pros: Trainers, walkers, sitters, vet techs, day care operators, boarding facility operators, groomers.

As part of our Grand Opening promotion, a "thank you" and welcome of all new students and puppy owners we are temporarily offering Puppy Play Groups for FREE! We plan to hold them at no charge for the next few months so now is the time for you puppy owners to get out there and socialize those babies! Puppy play is for those fuzzy sweet hearts 18 weeks old and under. As long as your pup has had his first round of shots it's NEVER too soon to start socialization!

18Jan2009

The Grand Opening was a great success. We'd like to thank Old Dog Haven, Pasado's Safe Haven and Comet's Tale for coming and making their valuable organizations a part of our gathering. We are happy to have raised some money for all three by raffling off some lovely gift baskets as well as a beautiful paper "quilt" made by Cathy vonHaartman's 3rd grade students. And of course, all of our volunteers and friends that helped make the Opening happen deserve a big "thank you". So thank you Margaret, Sue, Erin, Teresa,Tim, Layla and Ruth! Without you we couldn't have done it.

But most of all we'd like to thank those of you in the community who came out and made it a fabulous day. You and your dogs made it the success that it was and we are so proud that you came out to see what UCLA Dogs is all about!
